nterview with Granitara: The Social Life of a Conscious Asteroid on Zonspil Nexus
What happens when a conscious asteroid gets stranded among the debris of Zonspil Nexus? We spoke with Granitara-the most personable chunk of space rock ever waylaid in Spiraalknoest-about love, rivalry, and the company of lightdreamers. Spoiler: this encounter was anything but dull.
Quix Nulven Good morning, Granitara. Okay, it might sound odd, but what does it actually feel like to be an asteroid, here among all these chaotic life forms?
Granitara Haha, well, don't forget I've wandered alone for thousands of years. Everything here is... noisier. But I love finally having conversations that aren't just echoes.
Quix Nulven I can imagine! So, how did you end up here on Zonspil Nexus after orbiting that forgotten gas giant?
Granitara That was pure chance, actually. I collided with a rusty cargo barge, changed course, and suddenly I was wedged into an archaeological ditch down here. Now, well-now I’m a kind of monument... with company.
Quix Nulven Haha, company in Spiraalknoest! What’s life like as a sentient asteroid in this decayed metropolis?
Granitara So different from drifting through the stars. Locals keep trying to archive pieces of me or plug me into their network. That gets ticklish sometimes. Still, I enjoy the pulsing night lights and the smell of heating silicon after a sandstorm.
Quix Nulven Your neighbors must be strange. Who do you get along with best?
Granitara Oh, definitely the lightdreamer colony nesting under my eastern side. They flash a new pattern every hour-it’s like a massage for my basalt cores.
Quix Nulven How do you respond when holo-nomads try to claim you as a checkpoint?
Granitara *laughs* Usually I just drop a little gravel. They don’t much like unexpected rock avalanches. After that, they tend to be much more polite.
Quix Nulven Is there anything about Zonspil Nexus you really can’t stand?
Granitara Definitely: the ever-zealous Combinatoric Council, always convinced I’m hiding strategic sand reserves. I’m an asteroid, not a secret data bunker!
Quix Nulven How do you spend your days?
Granitara I tune into radiowaves from the past (it’s a relaxing hobby), tell stories to the informative sandworms wandering by at night, and try not to become someone’s lunch spot during the food storms.
Quix Nulven Do you ever feel nostalgic for space?
Granitara Sometimes I miss the cool emptiness, but here on Zonspil Nexus, there’s never a dull second. Quarrels, solar flares, market days-they all blend into one grainy flow. There’s always something happening.
Quix Nulven Just between us: have you ever fallen in love with another rock?
Granitara *chirps briefly on a mineral frequency* Okay, maybe with Fluoria 7, a gorgeous jade fragment from the Splijtplateau. But, well, that was an unreachable orbit.
Quix Nulven Wow, romance among space gravel! What’s one thing you never expected when you arrived?
Granitara That I’d one day be part of the Night Market Games as an obstacle course. Or that I’d laugh so hard at sand-sensitive informants publicly bickering about shortcuts along my shadow.
Quix Nulven If you could change one thing about Zonspil Nexus, what would it be?
Granitara More bridges, both literally and figuratively. These networks are full of holes. Massive, actual holes.
Quix Nulven What’s your take on the plan to reunite the Nexus with a chain of spiral obelisks?
Granitara Ambitious! But I say: try scheduling lunch with neighbor Templehof before you knit the whole planet together.
Quix Nulven Do you have a dream for your future?
Granitara Yes: someday I’d like to drift again-this time as a metaphor at Nexus diplomatic summits. Or just find a nice sunny spot.
Quix Nulven Granitara, I’m completely energized after this chat. Any last cosmic advice for our readers?
Granitara Roll with what you’ve got, let a little gravel go when needed-and remember: connection outlasts basalt.
Quix Nulven This is... honestly exceptional. Thanks for your time, your wisdom-and for not crushing us.
Granitara My pleasure! And if anyone wants a bit of mineral souvenir-please knock politely!
